Konecranes reuses 16,000 tonnes of concrete with RSK Group

Konecranes faced the challenge of sustainably demolishing its large, vacant Demag administration building in Germany to prepare the site for future residential and retail development. The complex project required the remediation of contaminated soil, the proper disposal of hazardous materials like asbestos, and a key goal of reusing demolished materials on-site to align with the client's philosophy. RSK Group company Althoff & Lang was engaged to handle the geotechnical and environmental aspects, including waste management and planning assessments.

The solution implemented by RSK Group involved a highly coordinated, multidisciplinary approach that focused on on-site recycling. A long-reach excavator with demolition shears was used for precise dismantling, allowing 16,000 tonnes of concrete rubble to be processed and recycled on-site for future use as backfill. Contaminated materials were identified and safely disposed of in accordance with legal requirements. This sustainable approach significantly reduced transport and disposal costs and associated emissions, leaving the ground in better condition and making the project an exemplary model for modern land revitalization.
