Case Study: Colorado Springs Utilities achieves $160,000 in savings and doubles hydrant maintenance efficiency with RouteSmart Technologies

A RouteSmart Technologies Case Study

Preview of the Colorado Springs Utilities Case Study

With RouteSmart, Colorado Springs Utilities saved time and money while improving efficiency and ensuring safety

Colorado Springs Utilities, a locally owned non-profit serving about 193,000 customers, faced inefficient, hand-routed preventative maintenance (PM) of 17,000 hydrants and cumbersome gas leak surveys that forced crews to crisscross streets and enter data back in the office. To address safety and operational inefficiencies, the utility adopted RouteSmart Technologies’ routing solution and integrated it with their Pipeline Compliance System (PCS) and handheld devices.

RouteSmart Technologies generated optimized PDF and handheld routes that crews could “pick and go,” eliminating manual planning, cutting errors, and speeding field work. The solution doubled hydrant PM productivity (from ~22–26 to 45–52 hydrants/day), helped move a four-to-five month inspection project to about 1.5–2 months, and—combined with PCS—delivered roughly $160,000 in total savings (about $30,000 of which came from routing time savings).
