How the Swiss Post optimized over 2,300 mail routes and saved over 2.5 million Swiss francs (CHF)

Swiss Post, Switzerland’s national postal service, faced growing inefficiencies as expanding addresses, traffic and mail volumes made routes less geographically compact and increased travel times. Manual and Excel-based route verification could not scale, so Swiss Post turned to RouteSmart Technologies and its RouteSmart for ArcGIS solution to benchmark and reorganize more than 2,300 mail routes across the country.

Working with RouteSmart Technologies, Swiss Post automated routing, trained staff and involved carriers in continuous improvement, setting up a routing competency center to manage large reorganizations. The RouteSmart for ArcGIS implementation allowed optimization of about 1,000 routes per year, cut individual delivery times by 3–5%, and produced cost savings exceeding 2.5 million CHF (including roughly 1.38 million CHF in 2013).
