How the D.C. Department of Public Works Got More Operational Efficiencies Out of their Street Sweeping Program

The D.C. Department of Public Works was operating a 15-year-old, manually created street‑sweeping system with over 90 inefficient, non‑contiguous routes that missed service windows and made it difficult to add streets. To modernize and improve operational efficiency, D.C. DPW engaged RouteSmart Technologies and implemented its RouteSmart for ArcGIS route optimization software to benchmark, redesign and streamline routes.

Using RouteSmart Technologies’ route balancing and sequencing solvers, D.C. DPW integrated existing service data, field‑validated the new plans, and cut routes from 90 to 54—nearly a 50% reduction—enabling the city to serve more territory with less equipment and staff, free up time to service areas like the Anacostia Watershed, and support improved stormwater‑quality compliance.
