Case Study: Woodbridge Township achieves $4 million annual sanitation savings with RouteSmart Technologies

A RouteSmart Technologies Case Study

Preview of the Woodbridge Township Case Study

How RouteSmart helped support Woodbridge, NJ in reducing costs by $4 million per year

Woodbridge Township, New Jersey, needed to cut costs and become competitive with potential privatization in its Sanitation Department while absorbing additional routes from Carteret. The township moved to automated trucks but faced inefficient, overlapping routes and uneven workloads across its fleet. To address this, Woodbridge turned to RouteSmart Technologies and its RouteSmart routing software to support route consolidation and optimization.

RouteSmart Technologies implemented RouteSmart to re-balance and consolidate routes, eliminating overlaps and enabling automated collection schedules. As a result Woodbridge reduced daily routes from 20 to 14, cut sanitation field staff from 107 to 44, handled Carteret’s routes without new hires or trucks, increased recycling from ~8,000 to nearly 12,000 tons annually, and achieved approximately $4 million in annual sanitation savings.
