Family-owned Company Recognizes the Need for a Better Route Optimization System

Smith Brothers Farms, a family-owned dairy serving the Seattle area, needed a more accurate route optimization and planning system to manage complex street networks, balance compact territories, and cut costs without cutting drivers. To solve this, Smith Brothers Farms partnered with RouteSmart Technologies and used RouteSmart for ArcGIS to model and optimize its routes.

RouteSmart Technologies modeled service times and travel speeds, used RouteSmart solvers to generate and test scenarios, and applied route editing tools and a four-day workweek rotation to reduce vehicles and overtime while keeping drivers. In the first region (16,000 customers on 71 routes) the solution delivered a 5.7% efficiency gain, an estimated $200,000 in annual savings, and elimination of 32 overtime hours per week; Smith Brothers plans to roll out RouteSmart Technologies’ approach across its remaining service area with further truck and overtime reductions.
