The City of Burnaby faced a major operational change: switching from weekly to biweekly residential waste collection while moving collection crews from a five-day to a four-day work week, which required creating new garbage-day zones and balancing thousands of stops across varied collection types and laneways. To address this complexity the City partnered with RouteSmart Technologies, deploying RouteSmart for ArcGIS to model scheduling rules, exact pickup locations, and multiple collection scenarios.

RouteSmart Technologies implemented software installation, data clean-up, on-site training and created 80 balanced residential routes, enabling the City to launch the transformation in less than six months (implementation completed within five months) and achieve measurable results including a 5% efficiency improvement and large reductions in total weekly collection time for service to about 70,000 households and roughly 480 businesses and schools. The City continues to use RouteSmart for ongoing route maintenance and further optimization across departments.
