Case Study: CETIM reduces gearbox vibration and failure with Romax Technology

A Romax Technology Case Study

Preview of the CETIM Case Study

CETIM uses RomaxDESIGNER to help clients avoid gearbox failure

CETIM, France’s Technical Centre for Mechanical Industries, needed a better way to support clients with gearbox failure analysis, redesign, and optimization while linking scientific research to practical industrial application. To do this, CETIM used Romax Technology’s RomaxDESIGNER software to analyze transmission problems with a “whole system” perspective, including casing, dynamics, noise, and vibration.

Using Romax Technology’s RomaxDESIGNER, CETIM identified that insufficient casing stiffness was causing deformation and misalignment in a vessel’s twin-motor gearbox system, leading to repeated gear and bearing damage. By modifying the gear micro-geometry, CETIM reduced vibration from 25 mm/s RMS to 3 mm/s RMS and extended operating time from around six months between gearbox replacements to more than 18 months without interruption.
