CAE Calculation for Transmission Manufacturing Tolerances With Volkswagen Group

Volkswagen Group, Europe’s largest carmaker, needed a way to identify possible improvements in transmission manufacturing to make production more robust while optimising product quality. To address this challenge, it worked with Romax Technology using Romax software to analyse gearbox and gear manufacturing variability, including the effects of tolerances on NVH and overall transmission quality.

Romax Technology implemented a whole-system modelling and simulation approach that combined gears, shafts, bearings, and housings in one gearbox model. This allowed Volkswagen Group to predict the impact of microgeometry variations, bearing preload, and stator interference, validate results with test rigs, and support downstream gear optimisation in Wolfsburg—helping improve durability, reduce noise, and better target manufacturing tolerances and production settings.
