Case Study: Metra achieves more accurate forecasts and global competitiveness with Rogue Wave Software's IMSL Fortran Library

A Rogue Wave Software Case Study

Preview of the Metra Case Study

Weather Service Uses IMSL™ Library to Gain Competitive Advantage in the Global Weather Services Market

Metra, a New Zealand–based weather and information services company, needed a robust, flexible and cost‑effective way to improve local area model (LAM) forecasts for media, aviation and energy customers. Faced with limited CPU/memory and the need to integrate into a 24/7 operational environment, Metra turned to Rogue Wave Software’s IMSL Fortran Library to provide the statistical tools required for post‑processing and model refinement.

Using Rogue Wave Software’s IMSL Fortran Library on Linux, Metra implemented regression, covariance, Kalman and optimization routines to post‑process raw LAM output (performed four times daily in 6‑hour blocks and processing tens of gigabytes per day) on desktop PCs and separate machines. The solution delivered more accurate forecasts, lower CPU/memory usage and measurable business impact—enabling Metra to sell tailored forecasts globally to energy firms and traders and compete head‑to‑head in the global weather services market.
