Virginia Tech Students and Faculty Use IMSL® Fortran Libraries for Advanced Studies in Chemical Engineering

Virginia Tech, a leading research university with a top-ranked Chemical Engineering program, needed heavy-duty, reliable numerical tools to build and expand complex models for computational fluid dynamics, finite element analysis, molecular modeling, heat and mass transfer, and extrusion-die flow optimization. To teach students real-world problem solving without making them build algorithms from scratch, Virginia Tech adopted Rogue Wave Software’s IMSL F90 (IMSL Fortran Libraries / IMSL F90 MP).

Rogue Wave Software supplied the IMSL F90 library—more than 1,000 robust Fortran numerical routines—which let faculty and students extend subroutines and focus on modeling rather than low-level coding. The impact was measurable: dramatic runtime improvements (one problem that took 8 hours with another product ran in seconds with IMSL), up to a 95% reduction in programming time, broader problem coverage, and stronger student outcomes and research productivity for Virginia Tech.
