University of Basel Analyzes Microscopic Images with PV-WAVE

The University of Basel needed a way for Ph.D. students and casual researchers to analyze and visualize scanning-probe microscopy data with a user-friendly GUI while still supporting advanced custom processing. They selected PV-WAVE from Rogue Wave Software as the single tool able to combine high-performance 4GL array processing, advanced math and graphics, and GUI-building options to meet those requirements.

Rogue Wave Software’s PV-WAVE enabled the team to develop the SXM‑SHELL application—using built-in functions and more than 200 custom routines—to deliver real-time image analysis and an open-ended menu system. The result was rapid development (bulk of work done in the first two months), a codebase of about 30,000 lines, deployment to roughly 30 local users plus installations across Europe and the U.S., and a low entry barrier (typical users learn the menu in about an hour), demonstrating clear time-to-value and extensibility.
