UBM Tech Gives Content Publishing Power to the People with Zend and PHP

UBM Tech, a division of UBM that operates large-scale web properties such as InformationWeek and manages roughly 50 sites serving 14.5 million professionals, faced a legacy, static ATG Dynamo environment, fragmented code reuse, slow off-hours updates, and scarce back-end talent. To modernize and standardize development, UBM Tech selected Rogue Wave Software’s Zend PHP platform (including Zend Server, Zend Studio and Zend Framework) to drive a wholesale conversion to a PHP-based, reusable framework.

Rogue Wave Software implemented the Zend stack to provide a common MVC framework, integrated development tools, application monitoring, and caching/cluster management, automating the application lifecycle and enabling rapid builds. The results included ~60% common code across sites, new sites launched in 5–6 weeks (development time cut by as much as 75%), better-than-100% performance improvements (page load times from 2.3s to 0.9s), and reliable handling of massive spikes on sites delivering 30–70 million page views/month.
