Healthdirect Australia operates the National Health Services Directory (NHSD), a nationwide directory of doctors, pharmacies, hospitals and emergency departments that must be available anytime, anywhere to state and federal agencies, websites and mobile apps. The challenge was securely exposing diverse back-end SOAP services to many web and mobile consumers (widgets and apps); to address this Healthdirect worked with Rogue Wave Software using the Akana API Gateway / API Management platform to manage, secure and monitor API access.

Rogue Wave Software implemented Akana’s API Gateway to publish the SOAP backend as REST APIs, mediate REST-to-SOAP and XML-to-JSON transformations, support JSON/JSONP/CORS, enforce API-key authorization, integrate with LDAP, and run in Healthdirect’s private AWS cloud with stringent security and third‑party testing. The solution — which went live in August 2013 — produced configurable, embeddable widgets and mobile access, delivered flexible, compliant and economical data provisioning to multiple web and mobile clients, and added runtime monitoring and control (response times, success/failure metrics) over NHSD API traffic.
