A Rogue Wave Software Case Study
Brigham Young University physics student Marian Harrison needed to quantify how mirror-surface roughness affects extreme ultraviolet (EUV) optics to evaluate coatings such as thorium dioxide for space probes and satellites. The team required a broad mathematics library with easy Java integration, so they used Rogue Wave Software's JMSL Numerical Library for their simulations and analysis.
Using Rogue Wave Software's JMSL Numerical Library with Eclipse on a Windows PC, Harrison simulated perfectly smooth and thorium-dioxide-coated mirrors, generated surface charts, and modeled EUV reflection with Random, Quadrature, Spline, and Fourier Transform routines. By collecting 1,000 points per degree from 0°–90° and comparing smooth versus rough surfaces, the JMSL-enabled application produced visualizations and a measured effective reflection coefficient for the coating—a result Harrison presented at a Society of Physics Students session and that can be applied to evaluate other materials.
