Tata Motors Migrates to New MES with Negligible Downtime

TATA Motors, a major Indian automaker, needed to upgrade an aging manufacturing execution system at its Pune passenger vehicle plant because of availability problems, quality gaps, and increasing customization in the legacy MES. The company chose Rockwell Automation and its FactoryTalk ProductionCentre software to help standardize its MES landscape and support higher-quality, more connected operations.

Rockwell Automation implemented a carefully planned, shop-by-shop migration that ran old and new systems in parallel using data bridges, allowing TATA Motors to go live with negligible disruption. The project finished with just 0.1% downtime—about 2 hours and 45 minutes out of roughly 1,600 operating hours—with normal production maintained, improved quality through automated data collection and alerts, and a stronger link between plant-floor and enterprise systems.
