Repsol Unearths Operations Benefits in SIS Migration

Repsol, the global oil and gas company, needed to replace aging safety instrumented systems (SIS) at its NPF and SPF production facilities in Ecuador to meet a new internal safety standard and reduce downtime risk. The legacy systems were still running, but they had limited spare parts, poor diagnostics, and little visibility into performance, making them harder to maintain. Repsol worked with Rockwell Automation and Exida, using an Allen-Bradley ControlLogix-based SIS.

Rockwell Automation implemented the new SIS with easy integration to Repsol’s installed base, plus a fiber-optic communications network and alarm/event capabilities for better monitoring. The NPF migration was completed in 21 days, and the larger SPF site was also migrated in the same timeframe, both without interrupting production. As a result, Repsol achieved compliance at both facilities, reduced downtime risk, improved troubleshooting and predictive insight, and standardized on one platform to lower spare-parts inventory.
