Anglo Platinum, the world’s largest platinum producer, needed to replace an aging, vendor-fragmented process control system that was difficult to maintain, hard to upgrade, and not flexible enough for its complex refinery operations. The refinery’s hybrid batch and continuous processes also required better support for equipment sharing, recipe tracking, and standardized control, so Anglo Platinum turned to Rockwell Automation and its PlantPAx process automation system.

Rockwell Automation implemented a customized, ISA-88-compliant PlantPAx solution with reporting, visualization, and historian capabilities, built on Anglo Platinum’s existing control infrastructure. The result was improved real-time visibility across the plant, tighter production control, reduced batch variability, and easier maintenance and troubleshooting. Operators can now track recipes and KPIs in real time, while the single-vendor system has increased flexibility and scalability for future needs.
