How German Universities are improving their communication through Rocket.Chat

The University of Bielefield faced the need for a fast, secure and GDPR-compliant communication platform to support cross‑institutional research and administrative collaboration. Together with the GWDG, they selected Rocket.Chat as the instant‑messaging solution to provide real‑time channels, high data privacy and centralized authentication for staff, students and external research partners.

Rocket.Chat was deployed as a regular service (hosted in the Bielefeld ITS data center and operated to meet IT security guidelines), integrated with SAML single sign‑on, and supported professionally by the vendor. The platform quickly scaled: it serves roughly 2,700 university employees, reached about 600 concurrent users at peak times, and has handled some 2,000,000 messages over three years, demonstrating improved availability, collaboration and compliance under Rocket.Chat.
