UPMC Increased Diversion With Portfolio-wide Scalable Program

UPMC, a world-renowned healthcare and insurance provider, faced a significant challenge in improving its sustainability efforts due to a market dominated by traditional "landfill-first" waste haulers, which offered few options for waste minimization. RoadRunner provided its tech-enhanced, fully-managed waste management and recycling services to address this lack of sustainable provider options and the low recovery rate of disposed materials.

The RoadRunner solution began with a pilot program at UPMC St. Margaret, utilizing proprietary technology to identify key waste streams and implement a simplified recycling process. This approach increased the number of recycled material streams from one to five and established a scalable program. RoadRunner projected the annual impact of the pilot to be equivalent to removing the emissions of 16 passenger vehicles and conserving 8,531 gallons of gasoline, with the potential for much larger impacts if expanded across all UPMC locations.
