UPMC expands recycling from 1 to 5 material streams with RoadRunner

UPMC, a world-renowned healthcare provider, faced a challenge in driving waste minimization and sustainability. In a market dominated by traditional haulers, most disposed materials were sent directly to landfill with limited recycling options. The vendor RoadRunner provided its tech-enhanced, fully-managed waste and recycling services to address this.

RoadRunner implemented a scalable recycling program, beginning with a pilot at UPMC St. Margaret. Using proprietary technology, they identified key waste streams, simplified processes, and added clear signage. This expanded recycling from one material to five streams. The results included a significant projected annual environmental impact, such as removing emissions equivalent to 16 passenger vehicles. RoadRunner estimates the potential impact across all UPMC locations could be substantially larger.
