Torbay Council Extends Trial of AI Based Road Condition Assessments

Torbay Council faced challenges in assessing the condition of its extensive unclassified road network due to resource constraints and a lack of cost-effective, scalable solutions. To address this and meet Department for Transport standards, the council's highways company, SWISCo, procured an innovation trial with RoadMetrics AI.

RoadMetrics provided a tailored AI solution that enabled the council's staff to easily conduct surveys using a smartphone app. The system automated road condition ratings and integrated with existing GIS systems, processing data with an 8-hour turnaround. The successful trial, praised for its accuracy and ease-of-use, led Torbay Council to extend the RoadMetrics trial to cover an additional 200 km of roads.
