Ealing Council Conducts Innovation Trial with RoadMetrics AI

Ealing Council, located in West London, was exploring innovative approaches to enhance the efficiency of its highways service. The council aimed to find an alternative method for assessing the condition of its extensive 600 km road network. To meet this challenge, they initiated an innovation trial with RoadMetrics AI to evaluate the accuracy, ease of use, and reporting capabilities of an AI-based system for conducting on-demand road surveys.

RoadMetrics AI implemented a smartphone-based video survey system that provided a comprehensive analysis of the road network, identifying defects and over 65 types of highway assets. The solution generated a condition rating for the roads surveyed, with 49.1% rated as Level 0 and only 4.8% as Level 3. The RoadMetrics AI system provided a digital record of the network, a web-GIS platform for visualization, and data export compatible with UKPMS standards, enabling seamless reporting and integration for the council.
