Why a strong comprehensive school in South East Essex believes overcoming obstacles is such a powerful lesson for later life

The King Edmund School in Rochford, South East Essex, is a large comprehensive school with around 1,600 students, a mixed catchment, and a significant proportion of pupils facing literacy and deprivation challenges. When the pandemic hit, the school had to rapidly move teaching, support and communication online, while also helping families with device access and engagement. RM Education supported the school with technical support and products including RM Unify, helping it adapt its IT environment for remote learning.

RM Education worked with the school’s network team to configure and support its move to Microsoft Teams, integrate it with RM Unify and Office 365, and help put the right policies in place. The school also used Show My Homework during the first lockdown and then moved to Teams for the second, while improving staff setup with tablets and headsets. As a result, The King Edmund School achieved around 90% student engagement during lockdown, reduced disruption, and saw benefits that continued into normal school life, including remote homework, virtual parents’ evenings and easier collaboration for staff.
