Gauteng Department of Education successfully launch e-marking of live exams in South Africa

The Gauteng Department of Education in South Africa wanted a more efficient way to mark matric exams without compromising quality, while also reducing the burden on examiners who often had to travel long distances to marking centres. To support this, RM Education worked with local partner Lebone to introduce RM Assessor, an on-screen marking platform for secure digital exam marking.

RM Education’s RM Assessor was piloted with non-live scripts in 2019 and then used to mark 60,000 live exam scripts in 2020 for the Senior Certificate and National Senior Certificate exams. The solution improved marking speed and accuracy through automatic score calculations, enabled real-time progress and performance data, reduced travel and administration for examiners, and was widely praised as easy to use, with examiners reporting faster, fairer marking and no disadvantage to results.
