Merck KGaA, the healthcare/pharmaceutical company, was struggling with latency in its Lotus Notes mail application and needed a WAN optimization solution that could support future services. After evaluating several options, the company selected Riverbed Steelhead appliances and the Riverbed Services Platform (RSP).

Riverbed implemented about 80 Steelheads worldwide, delivering immediate results: up to 85 percent Lotus Notes optimization and a 30 percent reduction in bandwidth. Riverbed also improved end-user satisfaction and boosted CIFS and Internet performance, with CIFS optimization reaching 60–80 percent.
