A Riverbed Case Study
Pump Solutions Group (PSG) is a global pump manufacturer with facilities across the U.S., Europe and Asia. As PSG consolidated disparate brands onto a common IT platform, one subsidiary—Wilden Pump—faced rapidly growing data (about 1 TB/year), an aging tape-based disaster recovery process and a nearly fully virtualized environment (95% VMware, ~100 VMs), creating slow, labor-intensive backups and difficult VM-level restores.
PSG deployed Amazon S3 storage with a Riverbed Whitewater cloud gateway and Veeam Backup & Replication. Whitewater’s 7.51x deduplication cut 65.8 TB to 9 TB sent to S3, saving about $8.5K/month (> $100K/year) and eliminating tape costs and two hours/day of admin work; Veeam simplified VM backups and restores (including Instant VM Recovery and object-level recovery), reduced backup staff time by 20–30%, sped restores to hours, and shifted costs from capex to more flexible opex.
