Wan Optimization and Network Performance Management from Riverbed Solve Latency & Visibility Issues

Veolia Water Technologies, a global water and wastewater services provider with 130 business units, 10,300 employees and $2.9bn in turnover, struggled with high latency across a multi‑provider MPLS WAN that undermined central delivery of key applications (ERP) and left the company with poor end‑to‑end network visibility. Users experienced major variation in response times (for example, ERP screens opened in ~3 seconds in Paris but ~30 seconds in Australia), and tracing network faults could take up to a week.

Veolia deployed Riverbed SteelHead appliances (74 sites plus SteelHead Mobile at 110 smaller sites) and SteelCentral solutions (NetProfiler, Transaction Analyzer, Flow Gateway and embedded NetShark) to accelerate traffic and add packet/flow visibility. The results: dramatic application speedups (e.g., a Malaysia ERP screen dropped from ~47s to 6.4s, >80% improvement), the ability to centralize IT services without degrading user experience, clear end‑to‑end visibility, and troubleshooting times reduced from days to under an hour.
