A Riverbed Case Study
VINCI PLC, the UK arm of global construction group VINCI with 30 regional offices and 100 project sites, faced slow data restores, dispersed file and email servers in branches, and an inability to run Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) over its 100 Mbps WAN. These constraints prevented a centralized IT strategy, prolonged disaster recovery (up to 72 hours), and drove high operational and support costs.
By deploying 30 Riverbed Steelhead appliances with Central Management Console and implementing TSM, VINCI centralized backups and consolidated branch servers into its Watford data centers—removing 25 file servers and five Exchange servers and replacing them with three file and three Exchange servers. Recovery time dropped from 72 hours to under 24, WAN throughput improved 8x (100 Mbps → LAN-like 800 Mbps), and the company enabled SAN and SharePoint rollouts while reducing costs and support overhead.
