Utilities Company Centralizes Applications and Avoids Expensive Bandwidth Upgrade with Riverbed

Suez-Tractebel Operation and Maintenance Oman (STOMO), the largest O&M provider in Oman with six sites and ~370 employees, centralized critical applications (SAP, Exchange, Oracle HRMS) to a central data center after expansion. That centralization strained its small MPLS links (1 Mb at HQ, 512 kb at plants), causing slow application and file access and pushing the company toward a costly bandwidth upgrade.

STOMO deployed Riverbed SteelHead appliances and the Riverbed Central Management Console, which were fast to install as pass-through devices. The solution cut file-transfer times by more than 70% (HTTP by 82%), reduced WAN traffic from 19.7 GB to 3 GB, increased optimized bandwidth capacity over threefold, and avoided a $13,000 annual bandwidth upgrade—yielding faster applications, improved remote IT support, greater network visibility, and higher employee productivity.
