Using Whitewater/public cloud as archival tier yields $60,000 in CapEx savings

EnvisionRxOptions, a national pharmacy benefit manager, was managing 15 TB of data that was growing 30–50% annually and required 10-year retention for prescription records, including large WAV call recordings and financial spreadsheets. Keeping most data on tier‑one storage and backing it with EMC Avamar meant frequent, costly hardware and licensing upgrades and slow tape-based restores, creating an urgent need for a more scalable, secure archival approach.

Working with Champion Solutions Group, EnvisionRxOptions deployed a Riverbed Whitewater appliance with Nirvanix cloud storage, which encrypts data in-flight and at rest and reduces cloud volume via deduplication (up to 4:1 for spreadsheets) and ~50% WAV compression. The move avoided about $60,000 in immediate CapEx, cut cloud storage and transmission costs, and sped restores from 48 hours to about 5 minutes while meeting security and compliance requirements.
