Sappi, a global paper and pulp company with more than 15,000 employees and operations worldwide, relied on its WAN and key applications (Microsoft Office, SharePoint, SAP) — much of which ran over Citrix ICA — to keep the business running. Its previous WAN optimizer didn’t support many protocols (notably ICA), so Sappi needed a replacement that would improve application performance and give greater visibility into network and application behavior.

Sappi deployed 39 Riverbed Steelhead appliances and the Central Management Console for centralized control, then added Riverbed Cascade for deep application- and packet-level visibility. The solution cut WAN data by about 50%, noticeably improved application performance, and let IT identify and resolve issues in minutes (often ~30 minutes), giving the company much greater network control and efficiency.
