A Riverbed Case Study
Aurecon, a global engineering and technical services firm with more than 6,000 professionals across 23 countries, centralized key applications in data centers in South Africa and Australia but found remote users struggled with poor performance due to limited WAN bandwidth. The company wanted to consolidate Exchange servers to cut management and licensing costs but worried that further centralization would hurt employee productivity, especially given high bandwidth costs in some regions.
Aurecon deployed Riverbed WAN optimization—80 Steelhead appliances, the Riverbed Services Platform at 35 offices, Steelhead Mobile for 2,000 mobile workers and a Central Management Console—and immediately saw faster access to finance and file-sharing applications. Results included almost 60% reduction in WAN traffic, removal of 35 local Exchange servers, avoided costly bandwidth upgrades, improved application performance and higher employee productivity, enabling further IT consolidation and cost savings.
