Mindspeed Technologies, a Newport Beach–based semiconductor networking company with ~500 employees and more than 20 global offices, was struggling with slow WAN application performance. Remote engineering teams in the Ukraine, India and China could not use headquarters-hosted apps (SAP NetWeaver, Oracle PLM, Lotus Notes, CVS), resorting to emailing files, maintaining costly local backups, and exhausting bandwidth links that were expensive to upgrade.

Mindspeed deployed 16 Riverbed Steelhead appliances and a central management console, which were easy to install and immediately accelerated application performance. WAN traffic fell ~76%, boosting effective bandwidth 4.3x, saving an estimated $100K–$200K per year with payback under 12 months; Oracle PLM ran up to nine times faster and SAP about three times faster. The improvements restored real-time collaboration, enabled IT consolidation (centralized servers and backups), and allowed rollout of new SAP-based planning tools.
