A Riverbed Case Study
Rayonier, a global forest-products company with timber, real estate and performance-fiber operations, faced a highly distributed IT environment—eight data centers and more than 230 servers supporting ~2,000 users—that was costly and hard for a small IT team to manage. The company wanted to move to a private cloud to simplify infrastructure and cut costs, but had to ensure consolidation would not degrade end-user performance.
Rayonier deployed Riverbed Steelhead appliances alongside VMware to centralize services, reducing eight data centers to two and consolidating 230 physical servers into 15 virtual servers while installing Steelhead at ~20 sites. The project cut bandwidth use 70–90%, delivered 12–18× faster application performance, required no extra bandwidth, and achieved payback in under one year with no noticeable impact to end users.
