Riverbed Steelhead Appliances Give Temporary Construction Sites LAN-like Performance for Civil Engineering Firm

BAM Civiel, the Dutch civil‑engineering arm of the BAM Group, needed a flexible way to connect dozens of temporary site huts to its centralized systems. With a small IT team, latency‑sensitive document management (Filenet) and very large AutoCAD files, the company faced heavy WAN loads, slow application performance and time‑consuming local server deployments at each site.

BAM deployed 20 Riverbed Steelhead appliances to replace on‑site servers and optimize WAN traffic, delivering LAN‑like performance and dramatically faster transfers of large design files. The solution enabled plug‑and‑play site rollouts (often within half a day), eliminated local servers, reduced manual tasks and errors, and made centralized storage, backup and Exchange consolidation practical.
