A Riverbed Case Study

Riverbed Steelhead appliances enable IT consolidation and reduce costs for turnkey lifting and transport company

Mammoet, a global specialist in heavy lifting and transport with 3,500 employees and about 60 offices worldwide, needed to consolidate IT from dozens of local servers into three regional data centers to improve redundancy and reduce costs. The company worried that centralizing applications like SAP and Microsoft Office/Outlook would degrade performance over the WAN and hurt employee productivity, so it sought a solution that would deliver LAN-like access for remote and mobile workers.

After testing vendors, Mammoet deployed Riverbed Steelhead appliances (40 units), a Central Management Console and Steelhead Mobile to optimize WAN performance. The rollout removed 24 local servers, covered 80% of branch offices, cut bandwidth utilization by 3x, and reduced storage traffic (iSCSI ~79%, CIFS ~66%, MAPI ~73%), enabling fast, LAN-like access for mobile staff while lowering management and infrastructure costs.
