Stanley Consultants is a global engineering and consulting firm with more than 1,100 staff across 15 offices. While migrating to Exchange 2003 to simplify infrastructure and reduce costs, the company found that cached-mode clients caused unacceptable WAN spikes and poor email performance, threatening consolidation plans and the goal of keeping some small offices serverless.

Stanley deployed Riverbed Steelhead appliances to 15 sites to optimize WAN traffic and streamline Exchange/MAPI chattiness, plus prepopulate large project files. The result: LAN-like email and application performance, average WAN data reduction of 72% (up to 84% for Exchange), consolidation of Exchange servers from 9 to 2, some serverless offices, and a payback in under a year.
