A Riverbed Case Study
American Suzuki Motor Corporation (ASMC), the U.S. subsidiary of Suzuki Motor Corporation headquartered in Brea, California, distributes vehicles and parts to roughly 500 dealerships across 49 states. As ASMC consolidated file servers and storage from three remote distribution sites to a central data center, it needed to preserve LAN-like application performance over T1 WAN links and improve responsiveness for about 300 mobile laptop users who were experiencing slow email and data‑intensive apps like Siebel and SQL.
ASMC deployed four Riverbed SteelHead appliances (one at the data center and one at each remote site), the Riverbed Services Platform running Windows Server to host DNS/print services, and 300 SteelHead Mobile licenses. The deployment eliminated the need for a costly bandwidth upgrade, delivered payback in about four months, and produced nearly $100,000 in annual savings (≈$36K bandwidth, $30K hardware/software, $30K support), while accelerating file transfers up to 50x, Exchange 10x, Siebel 15x, and markedly improving mobile and Microsoft application performance.
