Case Study: MHI Nuclear Engineering Co., Ltd. (MNEC) achieves more than 10 times faster remote replication and reliable BC/DR with Riverbed Steelhead appliances

Remote Replication Speed Increased By More Than 10 Times After Deployment of Riverbed Steelhead Appliances

MHI Nuclear Engineering Co., Ltd. (MNEC), part of the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Group, needed a reliable remote replication system between its Yokohama and Kobe offices to strengthen business continuity and disaster recovery (BC/DR). Growing data volumes and a limited 10 Mbps leased WAN link created a serious bottleneck, but upgrading the connection was costly and infrastructure changes were impractical.

MNEC deployed Riverbed Steelhead appliances in a trial and then production, which accelerated replication by more than 10× (a 300 GB sync fell from ~74 hours to ~6 hours, equivalent to ~110 Mbps) and delivered typical data reduction of 85%. QoS and caching ensured stable transfers with no impact on other traffic, enabling hourly backups instead of daily, lower total cost of ownership, and easier management without changing the existing WAN.
