Rayonier Advanced Materials, a newly spun-off global producer of specialty cellulose fibers, needed to build a separate, location-independent IT environment that would deliver excellent centralized application performance while keeping bandwidth costs down. The company favored a public‑cloud approach for cost reasons but required continued use of Riverbed SteelHead WAN optimization to avoid high network charges in remote locations.

Adopting a “Riverbed‑first” strategy, Rayonier Advanced Materials chose Peak 10 as its cloud provider and deployed SteelHead CX appliances in the data center, disaster recovery site and all corporate locations. The setup delivers LAN‑like performance for 200 applications to ~1,200 users (12–18x faster for key apps), achieves 75–80% deduplication, cuts network costs by about one‑third to one‑quarter, and paid back the SteelHead investment in under a year.
