Port of Anacortes Introduces Wireless to Its Challenging Marine Environment

Brigham Young University‑Idaho, a private four‑year university in Rexburg with about 15,000 students across a sprawling campus, faced inconsistent and confusing Wi‑Fi access from scattered hotspots that left students and faculty unsure where they could connect. Campus leaders needed pervasive, high‑capacity wireless that would cover indoor facilities and residence halls, support multiple devices per student, and handle classrooms of up to 150 simultaneous users.

Riverbed Xirrus deployed nearly 700 Xirrus Arrays (with plans to expand) to deliver 100% indoor Wi‑Fi coverage, capacity for 6,500 concurrent devices, and easier infrastructure with fewer switch ports and cable runs. The rollout reduced dropped connections, enabled dynamic classroom tools (streaming video, eBooks, audience clickers), produced significant cost savings on cabling and equipment, and delivered consistently positive feedback from faculty and students.
