Petrobras boosts application performance on offshore oil-drilling platforms with Riverbed

Petrobras, a global Brazilian energy company operating 40 offshore drilling platforms, struggled with high network and application latency that made applications slow for platform workers and stretched daily backups to as long as 34 hours—often interrupted because the process consumed critical bandwidth.

To address this, Petrobras deployed 43 Riverbed SteelHead appliances (40 offshore, three onshore) and uses Riverbed’s central management to monitor and optimize traffic. The deployment cut the backup window from 34 to 4 hours, reduced WAN traffic by about 65%, delivered LAN-like application performance on platforms, and significantly improved employee productivity and satisfaction.
