A Riverbed Case Study
SAME DEutz‑FAHR, a global manufacturer of tractors, combine harvesters and engines with about 2,400 employees and operations across Europe, India, China and Russia, consolidated its IT systems to a central data center in Treviglio, Italy. As applications and WAN traffic increased, employees experienced long delays accessing web apps and email, which hurt productivity and forced the company to consider either costly bandwidth upgrades or WAN optimization.
SAME DEUTZ‑FAHR piloted and then deployed Riverbed Steelhead appliances at headquarters and four remote sites, installed quickly with no infrastructure changes. The appliances dramatically reduced WAN traffic (weekly traffic dropped from ~18 Gb to 4.5 Gb and daily from 3 Gb to ~900 Mbps), sped file and application access from minutes to seconds, improved employee productivity, achieved about a 4x effective bandwidth gain and allowed the company to defer a bandwidth upgrade for three years.
