A Riverbed Case Study
Lathrop & Gage is a national law firm with centralized data centers supporting critical applications—voice, video conferencing and legal document systems—for its 320 attorneys. The firm relied on two MPLS circuits but ran them in an active‑passive configuration, causing disruptive 90‑second failovers, limited visibility into network performance, and inefficient use of expensive redundant links.
The IT team deployed Riverbed SteelHead appliances (WAN optimization, QoS and path‑selection) and SteelCentral NPM tools (Flow Gateway, NetProfiler, NetShark) to move to an active‑active design and gain end‑to‑end visibility. The result: failovers now occur in five seconds or less, usable bandwidth rose 200–300% with no capital expense, users see LAN‑like performance (enabling HD video), troubleshooting times dropped to minutes, and the firm achieved a stronger SLA and more efficient use of its network budget.
