A Riverbed Case Study
International Justice Mission (IJM) is a global human rights nonprofit that rescues victims of slavery, sex trafficking and violent oppression from 13 countries while supporting 15 field offices from headquarters in Washington, D.C. Facing a tight IT budget, limited and variable bandwidth in remote offices, and strict requirements for secure, long-term storage of prosecution data, IJM needed to centralize applications and backups without degrading performance or compromising security.
IJM deployed a hybrid cloud: a private cloud with Riverbed Steelhead WAN optimization to centralize applications (Exchange, SharePoint, help desk and a new case management system) and a Whitewater gateway to send deduplicated, encrypted backups to public cloud storage. The change eliminated major capital expenses (avoiding remote server and tape upgrades), cut travel and operating costs, reduced stored data from 17 TB to under 3 TB, delivered measurable ROI in months, improved collaboration and onboarding, and provided faster, safer restores for mission-critical data.
