Case Study: Lantmännen achieves $60M in IT savings and rapid site rollouts with Riverbed WAN optimization

How Swedish agribusiness Lantmännen cultivated a more cost-eff ective infrastructure

Lantmännen, a Swedish agricultural cooperative owned by 42,000 farmers with 13,000 employees and $5.5 billion in revenue, faced an unwieldy, decentralized IT environment that drove up fixed costs, made backups unreliable and slowed integration of new sites and acquisitions (which could take up to three months). Leadership required a more manageable, cost‑effective infrastructure focused first on production facilities.

After four months of evaluation and two weeks of deployment, Lantmännen rolled out Riverbed WAN optimization appliances and VMware server virtualization—installing appliances at 90 sites and virtualizing over 1,000 servers across 70 locations to date. The changes boosted application performance, cut bandwidth use (avoiding a $650,000 fiber upgrade), reduced provisioning time for new locations from months to days, and are projected to save more than $60 million over five years in servers, energy, telecommunications and head count.
