HBOS Australia, which includes BankWest, Capital Finance, St. Andrew’s and BOS International, faced an IT challenge: its legacy WAN architecture couldn’t deliver consistent, LAN-like application performance to support rapid east-coast expansion and new services without building an expensive data centre. Poor application responsiveness and the need for reliable interoffice communication threatened the bank’s growth and business agility.

HBOS deployed Riverbed Steelhead appliances—170 units rolled out to branch sites in just 45 days (now over 200 deployed) with centralized management—to accelerate applications and optimise WAN traffic. The rollout improved application performance across all sites, reduced WAN volume and costs, enabled VoIP and new services, increased network visibility for troubleshooting, and positioned the bank to extend the solution to roughly 350 offices.
