A Riverbed Case Study
The City University of New York (CUNY), a 23‑college system supporting roughly 461,000 students and 30,000 staff across 20 distinct IT environments, needed to build a cohesive security program under its new CISO without impeding academic freedom. Its priorities were to gain real-time visibility into network activity, proactively identify and isolate security issues, justify further technology investments with hard data, and balance protection of private information with an open campus network.
CUNY deployed 20 Cascade Profilers and nearly 50 Application Sensors across its 20 operating environments, completing the rollout in about six months. The tools gave immediate visibility into normal vs. abnormal traffic, corroborated other security controls, and avoided content monitoring. Results included about a 75% reduction in security events, incident response times improved by over 50%, a sharp drop in unauthorized internal scanning, better network management policies, and faster approval of additional security investments and training.
