A Riverbed Case Study
SUNY College at Old Westbury is a 604‑acre public campus near New York City serving about 4,400 students and 134 full‑time faculty. IT faced the challenge of securing a large, heterogeneous BYOD environment where campus-owned controls were impractical, internal devices frequently introduced malware and peer‑to‑peer traffic, and traditional client‑based access control proved too intrusive and ineffective.
The college deployed Riverbed’s Cascade Profiler and Cascade Pilot (flow analysis plus packet capture) starting with a 30‑day trial to map application flows to user IDs and perform deep packet dives when needed. The tools let IT quickly identify infected machines, remotely disable ports, and restore service—cutting mean time to resolution from days or weeks to minutes, delivering rapid ROI, improving network transparency and resiliency, and reducing the need for dedicated monitoring staff.
